Medeiros dominates Castillo winning by unanimous decision
By Britt Yap
Makaha's Yancy Medeiros added another win to his record tonight in his Strikeforce debut against Raul Castillo, defeating the BJJ specialist by unanimous decision at the Civic Auditorium in San Jose, Calif.
The 185-pounder's strikes seemed too much for Castillo to handle. Castillo's game plan was to take the Hawaiian down, but he was unsuccessful many times. The less-experienced Medeiros came into the fight with a record of 3-0, while Castillo was 6-0, but Medeiros looked more comfortable in the ring. Medeiros stalked Castillo almost all three rounds and showed his striking abilities, as well as his sprawling technique and take-down defense.
In the third round Medeiros was kneed hard in the groin, but the referee made him continue without allowing five minutes to recover. There were boos in the audience, and the commentators also questioned the call. Castillo went down earlier in the fight holding his groin, but the referee felt he was faking and said Castillo was hit in the stomach, not the groin, so he made him continue.
After the fight, Medeiros thanked his gym, trainers, family, friends and supporters back in Hawaii. He made sure to say "hi" to his daughter Kaya as well. Medeiros is now 4-0.
Stay tuned for an updated story with quotes. The fight will air at 9 p.m. Hawaii time on Showtime.
